After years down, a few seconds with a 2nd tier LLM has brought this monstrosity back to life. (now i can go back to neglecting it!)

I should create a vanity or "pride" topic. Anyway, It's hard to find a good, trustworthy charity to give to. At least, when you are as skeptical and untrusting as me. I.e. when one understands that, in the words of T.S. Elliott, [At least] "Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm -- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves" So I've decided to list a couple that I like. In ascending order: 1) American Refugee Committee. (though I get a lot of paper mail from them despite requests not to send). They have good ratings on the charity watch site and seem to be a good .org. 2) Water for People. I really like these guys. They take NO government money and have a very smart/reasonable approach to giving. (Standard "teach a man to fish" stuff, but also a basic understanding that people value things they have worked for more than things they are just given). give today:

It was a dystopian future where the computers ran the world - kinda. Really, it was a socialist utopian story, but the first 90% was this dystopia where the few wealthy business owners lived in luxury while the computers they owned ruled the country. Anyway, it had many flaws in the Xtopian part, but the computers running (at first it was only) the fast food chains I thought was really neat and well thought out as far as plausibility goes. And while the story painted a bleak picture of computers cracking down on workers, all I thought about was the fact that every fast food worker I've known complained mostly about his BOSS. Having a computer tell you what to do seems to me far more pleasant than having some irrational human doing it, and I can't help but thinking now - every time i go into a fast food joint - how much nicer it would be if it was being run by a computer :-) Of course, what I (and the story) failed to realize, is that the first step will just be all the monitoring tools that are so ominous in the story, *but* not in the hands of impartial computers - who aren't yet smart enough to do anything with that data - but in the hands of PHBs! Now that's an actual dystopia.

Now, obviously the city needs to do something, but why do they have to call it a "rescue".? I mean, does anyone actually believe they are going to find homes for 130 cats. No, they are going to kill them. But of course the article doesn't SAY that, it says they have been taken to an "animal control facility until authorities can figure out what to do with them." Umm, correct me if i'm wrong here but i'm pretty damn certain that "authorities" know JUST what to do with them, they do it every day. ahh, well this goes to show, i think, that even double-speak can rarely be attributed to malice.

Would someone please explain to me why anyone would give one rat's ass about which design is on the back of the California Quarter. I'm sitting here trying to think of something I care less about (failing, in case you were wondering) and yet NUMEROUS people are out there trying to get out the vote. Encouraging me to play along.
